I love the hat. I don't have really advance crochet skills but I can crochet. I'd love to make one for a friends daughter and frankly I'd love to make one for myself!! How much alteration would I need to do to make the hat fit an adult??
starfire - the hat is a very simple project... you shouldn't have any trouble with it (I still consider myself a beginner at crochet)
I haven't worked one for an adult yet, but I plan to
for an adult, I would work a couple more round of shaping... between round 5 and 6 on this pattern
5a. increase in every 5th stitch (72) 5b. increase in every 6th stitch (84)
then measure the circumference of your head, and the diameter of your circle... if necessary, work another row of increases (every 7th stitch - 96)
rounds 6-11 on the pattern have no shaping... add an extra 2 or 3 rounds to this for an adult hat... try it on! decide when you think it is long enough, and you are ready to start the brim
work round 12-15 for the brim shaping... try it on again... if it needs a few more rounds you can either continue increasing (which will make it more ruffled) or just dc into each stitch
This hat is soooooo precious! Thank you so much for sharing it. I have crocheted for years, and plan to make it and increase it a little for my 4year old granddaughter. I know she will love it! But in all my crocheting, I have never heard of a disappearing circle. Can you help me here?
I am having trouble. Do you chain in between rows and when you increace in between stiches do you put too dc in and the in the next stwich do you put one dc.
So cute!! I found you because I googled free crochet patterns. I usually knit, but I have some cotton yarn that is splitting with my knitting so I thought it might be easier to work in crochet. It is not suitable for this hat, but that just makes it necessary to go buy more yarn!:)
Ummm - about how many stitches to the inch should be in this hat? I crochet VERY loosely and if you don't, I will end up with a giant hat. Help! I really want to make this for my nieces!
I love this "adorable ruffles" hat and am going to make some for chemo hats for kids... do have one question: What is "fine ribbon yarn?" Thanks, gentsia
Thanks for sharing the pattern. The hat is adorable. I made one for my daughter for easter and another one for a friends little girl. The link is to a picture of my daughter wearing her hat. http://aoneskeinday.blogspot.com/ Thanks again.
Just wanted you to know, I love this site, I'm a beginning beginner, lol and will keep checking your site for hints and tips. If u come across a hat pattern u think will work with the B.B. crocheters (is that a word), plz post. Thx
I <3 these hats! Have bought my daughter loads of them and then I found this tutorial! So I made my first crochet project, a toddler sized scarf and then gave this a go. Just starting the brim now, but its 1.25am so had to put it away. I am amazed at how easy it is, it looks great! Now to get some sleep and finish it off in the morning.
so I made this and it fits my head! A lady I work with says I have loose stiching...thats just how I work but I also used a smaller size needle, It is going to a 5 year old tomorrow so I hope it won't be too big lol.
Can anyone tell me where to purchase the ribbon yarn used for this pattern. I have looked at my local Michales and Joann's and they do not carry it. Thanks Bobbie
I used to crochet, but I an barely remember how to do the stitches. Can you recommend a good beginner's book? This hat is sooooo adorable and I'd love to make it for one of my granddaughters.
I just made this hat with cotton. It is easy and adorable. Thanks for the pattern. I would like to make it for a newborn. Please tell me how to scale it down and what size hook I should use. Thanks
Thanks for letting me know about the broken link. The pattern is being hosted by Ravelry. I've notified them of the problem, as they are the only ones who can fix it. Thanks.
for a newborn you need to make your starting circle smaller, and the height of the hat shorter... you could still use the same hook and yarn if you wanted to though...
sorry, can't be more specific than that at the moment... the pattern link is broken, and even I can't view it!
I tried downloading the pattern and could not get it to do it.I think the hat is gorgeous and I would love to make it for my granddaughter, do you know if it can be fixed
As I understand the directions, you are crocheting two strands of yarn together. But the hook size specified seems too small to easily pick up both strands. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Hey Sue Ellen... I think I got a message from you about this over on Ravelry. You are using two strands of Worsted Weight yarn, which will be far too heavy... I have only used one strand of DK and one of sportweight (probably totalling a WW all together). Try using just one strand of the worsted - this should give a much better result.
Thanks for your explanation. Another question: Am I supposed to be crocheting in a spiral, or slip stitching at the end of each row and then chaining 3?
When I wrote this pattern, I joined each round with a slip stitch - and then the first dc of each round was actually a 3ch.
Since then I've played around with it a bit more.
I don't like seeing a "seam" in my work. Sometimes I replace the 3ch starting stitch with a "standing dc" but I find that even that isn't completely smooth.
So I prefer to work in a spiral.
For Round 1, work : ch 1, 3 sc, 3hdc, 6 dc - do not join
Then continue working as per the pattern, but do not join your rounds - work in a spiral instead.
If you want to include neat colour changes, then for the last 6 sts before a colour change - work 3 hdc, 3 sc, sl st join... then the first 6 of the new colour round are: ch 1, 3 sc, 3 hdc... then continue as usual.
Hoping all of this makes sense.
When I have time, I'm planning to rewrite the pattern formally - and it will be written in spirals, because I really think it looks so much neater.
My niece has a 10 year old friend who is getting ready to start chemo for brain cancer and she wants me to make this for a "chemo cap". What is the best way to size this for a 10 year old?
Oh that is very cute! Thanks for sharing the pattern. I am sure my daughter will just love this hat. :D
ReplyDeleteOkay, I have to make one of these. This is sooooooo cute. Great job. Thanks for the pattern!
ReplyDeleteI love the hat although with my crochet skills I don't think I will be making one. ;)

Bobbie... the ribbon yarn is a fine novelty yarn... you could repace it with another fine yarn, or leave it out entirely
ReplyDeleteI used to crochet, but I an barely remember how to do the stitches. Can you recommend a good beginner's book? This hat is sooooo adorable and I'd love to make it for one of my granddaughters.
