what can I use?

Okay, I'm going to take the video cassette apart, to see which parts I can recycle into my craft

1

I just need to remove the five screws

2

Then I lift the case apart

3

To discover the goodies inside...

4

I've lifted out the spools so I can cut the end of the the magnetic tape and separate them. Note to self (and anyone else who might be listening)... it's a good idea to REWIND the video first, so that all the tape is on the one spool. Not the end of the world if you don't, but it just makes the process easier.

Now to assess my materials...

5

Video plarn - to knit or crochet with

6

Empty spool - will go into the kid's craft box... and probably become wheels on a tissue box car, or something similar

7

These pieces will be added to my 'bead' collection to be used on a future project

8

These will go into my 'useless screws' jar... I know I will use them for something!

10

I have grand plans for recycling this case into something my daughter will love.

9

No idea what to do with this black plastic casing, other than dispose of it. I won't give it to the kids, because there are too many small pieces attached.

Anyone have an idea for me??? I'm open to suggestions of any kind!

  1. I can see the empty case being used as a tissue box cover. Can the plastic windows be removed easily?

  2. cat - do you mean the 'windows' in the black casing??? no, they can't be removed

  3. I like the idea of reusing things to make other things. A friend of mine makes jewelery out of computer parts (her husband works in IT so there is no shortage of those at their place).

  4. ooohhhh... your friend sounds very creative! I must admit, I love the challenge of working with recycled materials

  5. Hah - I did this a while ago and my girls used the cog bits as wheels for cars! Could you use the case as a journal cover - pop some reclaimed paper in it and jazz it up - would that work?

I'm with you and love working with recycled stuff - or junk as my husband calls it!

  7. Yep, I mean't the windows in the black case, how about a lid for something, make a box from the cassette tape and use the case for a lid. Or something non craft, use them for seedlings. Cheers Cat.

  9. You totally amaze me! Who woulda thought that videocassette tape could be crocheted? I love it! And what an adorable cluth bag. My funky daughters would love to carry that. Hmmmmmmmmm, time to dig out the old VHS tapes. Thanks for the great ideas!
