underpants
I have a confession to make...
one of the things that really, really, REALLY scares me...
is the size of my underpants!
I'm sorry if that's too much information for my more delicate readers out there... but it's true. Each year they've become a litte bigger... and a little bigger again... until they started to frighten me...
So I decided to face my fear of the ever-increasing undies, and do something about it.
My main problem is inactivity, and I don't think that I'm the only crafter out there who struggles with this problem. Quite frankly, I would much rather sit on my butt all afternoon and crochet, than go for a walk. Or if I was bored with crochet, I could always switch to knitting... or embroidery... or just surf the web for lots of creative ideas. It's not like I don't get any fresh air - if it's a nice day, I'll take my yarn outdoors to play.
Crafting is a very sedentary activity - and I do like to indulge in it whenever possible!
I certainly don't plan to give up on my craft. That would be insane... and far too painful. But I do need to balance it with some more demanding physical activity.
So I joined a gym!
Which I thought would be really scary, but wasn't...
The first one I checked out was perfect. Friendly and helpful staff. Clean, modern facilities. Fun atmosphere. Sensible, manageable workouts. Ongoing assessments and support.
And it is purple.
I know that seems like such a small thing compared to all those other points, but I decided to take it as a SIGN! The purple was perfect. It made me feel comfortable and at ease with the whole decision.
So today was my first workout. I overcame my reluctance to exercise in public, and I received a gold star on my name card! I love stars...
I'm so proud of myself for facing a fear, and dealing with it.
Good luck with the Gym - very scary place!
ReplyDeleteI'll just keep sitting here, seeing how you get on :-)
the bit about the undies is hilarious, or, to be frank, it would be if what you are saying weren't true of my own underwear too :( My full support for the gym, I have the same problem as you with gyms and seeing you go, I think one of these days I may join a gym too. Meanwhile, enjoy the fact that you are actually doing something about the size of those undies :)
ReplyDeleteI LOOOOOVED Curves. Their hours didn't/don't work very well with my schedule, so I scrapped that idea.
ReplyDeleteEveryone was so supportive and friendly and I was totally comfortable :)
Way to go. I am a fellow crafter from Holland but living in Egypt. I joined Curves last year here... they're great and it works. Anne
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on joining Curves. I'd also strongly recommend that you check out Sparkpeople.com for lots of free info and encouragement. My user name there is donnagettingfit
ReplyDeletecongratulations! that's a big step; i just got off my butt and started going to the gym for the first time in my life about a year ago, and it's made a big difference in my energy levels and general well-being. have fun!! this fall, i think my motivational trick is going to be buying one of those new cute ipod shuffles (only $75) and making some kick-ass workout mixes!
ReplyDeleteGo Sharon Go! You can do great things through your new exercise program. And you'll be inspiring your kids too. Nice work.
ReplyDeleteYou go Girl!!!!
ReplyDeleteFirst, I'm so glad you're back on your blog! You seem to be such an inspiration for many people - bring that with you further on in life. I'm looking foreward to read your blogposts. Crafting can be sedative, I know. And I wish you luck in coping with your fear of public trainging. You can do it, I'm sure you can. And, I'm sure all your readers will be here to support you!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations.
ReplyDeleteRather amazingly my husband sometimes puts my daughter's knickers (underpants) away in my underwear drawer. Neither my daughter nor I can understand the confusion - she's 9 and she could fit her waist in one leg of my knickers and I could only use hers as sunglass wipes. But it is so sweet that my husband thinks I could wear something so small -or perhaps it is part of being unable to understand that a skirt is different from a dress and that a pair of socks consists of two socks that look the same.
Good luck with the gym - enjoy.
Well done, I am facing this reality myself, about the underpants, but mine is the tummy spread! I'm working up to Fernwood, I think (just down the road). And think of the fellow REAL LIFE crafters you may meet, not us faceless cyber junkies haha
ReplyDeleteOh man, let me just reiterate that I'm so happy you're posting again.
ReplyDeleteAnd congratulations! Gyms are terrifying - you deserve applause for being brave enough to make a change.
And there is definitely a "crafter's bottom," that we all get after so many hours of sitting, working on a project. If only there were a way to crochet on the treadmill!
Sharon, as a big woman, I can positively say that you shouldn't let yourself get too worked up about the size of your underpants. Do what feels good to stay healthy. Definitely be active and Curves is great but do it for fun, as well as other things.
ReplyDeleteTruthfully, my comment has nothing to do with the gym or the size of your undies (well maybe, a little). Did you know there are undies patterns on Ravelry. One person I know online swears by them. Just thought I would share this with you all - lol
ReplyDeleteBest of luck to you at the gym, i have just joined the gym as well. Sometimes i feel like crocheting is a fine workout but its nice to get a little more physical sometimes too. Ive just started following your blog, thanks for keeping me entertained.
ReplyDeleteI must admit that ummmm,my underwear is a touch..mind you, just a touch bigger than last year. Ok, so they're a size bigger..and like you..I also embroidery, applique and crochet..then work with my blog. I just sit too much, so for me,I will go the exercise bike routine. Here's wishing us all good luck for smaller sizes.
ReplyDeletep.s. Your post had me laughing..thanks for the smiles.
Great post- i wondered if you were going to post a pic of your big pants for a moment :)
ReplyDeletegood luck with the gym , i'm sure you'll feel better for it, make sure you let us know how you're getting on
Happy November Sharon. Hope all is well.
ReplyDeleteI'm currently changing myself from the inside/out. Outside/in has never worked (diets, restriction, etc). So the inside out approach means that I'm facing the facts that I need to grow up and take responsibility for all my choices, stop throwing tantrums and just do what I need to do to get what I want, to achieve what I've failed at in the past. Reading your post has strengthened my resolve even further. I no longer feel like a lone ranger at this. I'm tired of pretending everything is cool, and having another slice of cake. I'm desperate for some change, for some action, and I'm glad you are too. Hugs xx Stra
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on the lack of exercise, though for me it's not a fear of gyms so much as lack of time, and difficulty of exercising with two small children in tow. :)
ReplyDeleteI just discovered your blog and much enjoyed reading past entries--I hope you'll start posting again soon!
You go, girl: ) The same thing was happening to my undies. I thought they were getting stretched out in the wash. Curves is a great with a supportive team. Good luck on your journey.
