In the interest of experimentation (which as you all know, I am a huge fan of) I decided to make another 'apple bag' this time using fabric strips.
This one was from an old doona cover (quilt cover) and I added a trim using kitchen string, just to be sure the handles were strong enough. I've embellished with a square of curtain netting, a ply starfish (from my scrap booking days) and a button.
It's just as stretchy, and easily holds 35 apples!
I'm amazed at its strength ! Do you have a pattern for this one? Looks marvellous, I just have to make one :-)
ReplyDeletepattern will be coming soon :)
ReplyDeleteit's disgustingly simple too!
You are SO clever, I can't crochet at all, that looks functional and funky. So much nicer than green bags!
ReplyDeletePS I read your first blog last night- I have a very similar story, 4 yrs of up and down, getting on track with it now. Thanks for sharing that, too.
beccasauras - thanks... I agree, MUCH nicer than the generic 'green bags'
ReplyDeleteI thought that you might have had a similar story to me... I read your blog a few days back, and could very much relate to the way in which you were struggling... it's a hard frustrating road, with way more ups and downs than I was expecting, but we'll both get there :)
I love your apple bags. i think you've just solved the "what can I give to the very helpful neighbours but very green neighbours who are nearly self sufficient?" problem. An produce collecting bag (or even a rag basket inspired by yours for storing the apples in) would be a great gift for them.
ReplyDeleteI've been lurking, reading your blog, loving your things but never really commenting. But I do look forward to seeing your posts and I think this last one has just inspired me to finally go up to the bedroom, to open the cupboard and to see what I can do with the fabric that WILL fall out.
thanks
The decoration is beautiful, I love it!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! I always wanted to knit/crochet with rags but could not find an easy, yet functional project - this one seems to be just the right on for a first-timer!
ReplyDeletewhatsonox - it sounds like the PERFECT gift for your neighbours!
ReplyDeleteas for the linen, my cupboard isn't nearly as full as it used to be, since I've started recycling like this... all those items I couldn't quite bring myself to throw out have actually come in very handy... have fun :)
misha - thanks... I love the decorating part... I think it gives your work a really individual touch
ReplyDeleteccc - yep! this one is easy and quick, and you wont need to spend too long snipping your fabric strips
ReplyDeletei LOVE this -- I've never tried my hand at crocheting before, but this definitely piques my interest. I can see myself experimenting all over the place with it :)
ReplyDeletemary grace - the world is full of possibility... give it a go, you might be surprised at yourself
ReplyDeleteJust stumbled upon this from an old link on Morsbags. I absolutely LOVE this bag. Do you have a pattern for it? I searched but can't find this one. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteshinyhappy - the pattern is here
