anyone for oranges?

orange bag - fence

Okay... I've reworked the 'apple bag' pattern... for those of you who do not have access to a 20.0mm hook

click here to see the original pattern

orange bag - closeup of stitches

body of bag

using a 10mm hook, ch 24 (I have used jute)

dc into 3rd chain from hook [ch1, skip1, dc] to end of row, ch1... NOTE: YOU HAVE ONLY WORKED INTO EVERY SECOND CHAIN OF THE FOUNDATION ROW

turn work upside down and work back along the foundation chain... INSTEAD OF WORKING INTO THE FOUNDATION CHAIN, WORK ACROSS THE FOUNDATION AND IN BETWEEN EACH OF THE DC... [dc, ch1, skip1] to last space dc, ch1... you have now worked a complete round, but DO NOT JOIN

continue working [dc, ch1] into the ch spaces of the previous round

work 12 rounds

mark where you want the handles to be

work in pattern to the first marker, ch 24 for first handle

resume pattern between markers 2 and 3, ch 24 for 2nd handle

pattern to end.. then sc... then ss to finish off

trim

using a 4.0mm hook and DK yarn (I have used cotton)

work 2sc into the spaces between the dc of the final round

when you reach the handles, work 30sc into each

join and fasten at the end of the round

Excellent! Thankyou, thankyou. I don't have one of those either ;-)
BUT I can get one...and I will.

I did pick up a stick yesterday, but I haven't done anything clever with it, yet.

Advantage receiver! Not tennis either, any one who gets their hands on your patterns are sure to be on a winner!
Well done yet again, I can barely keep up with all your new projects, crafty lady!

Lovely! Any idea what weight jute is like? I have some worsted-weight cotton I could use for this, if it would be close.

Thanks,
Heather

sam - oooohhhh.... a stick.... for carving.... into a hook.... WOO HOO!!!! I'm so excited to hear how you go with it!

cat - thanks for your beautiful comments... and that link is fab :)

heather - I'm all about experimenting... I would definitely try the worsted weight cotton... if for some reason you think it is a bit too lightweight as it works up, try using another strand of cotton with it... maybe a DK weight? I plan to make some of these bags using DK cotton... I'm expecting that I will probably use THREE strands worked together

tea - don't forget that this style of bag always looks a bit SILLY when it is empty ;)

misha - that's right... no excuses allowed... and you can use jute, cotton, rags, kitchen string, ANYTHING you fancy!

Sounds good, I'll give it a try! :)

when you say to work in a "round" does that mean you keep making a big loop around the base chain? as opposed to making a square flat thing? I'm not sure how this turns into a bag.

well, I thought my Lion brand Speed hook (size S 19mm) would work, but I didn't make it right so it's not stretchy AND way too small, but I have a great water bottle carrier! I always need a bigger hook, but as far as I can tell, that's as big as they come. But I have a tree trunk from a small tree that died and my husband is going to get to make me a hook... except that is 27-29mm... what do you think? Too big?

WOW! That will be a huge hook!

I do think it will be too big. Apart from the bag turning out ginormous... there is the issue of the holes created by the pattern. Using such a large hook, I would worry that the oranges would roll right on out of the bag...

I am intrigued by a hook that size though. It would be BRILLIANT to use for a floor rug using strips of fabric.

Such a seemingly simple pattern, yet so many things that are not well explained and cause confusion.
If we chain 24, start working in the 3rd chain (22) and work in alternate chains, that leaves the first chain unworked. Shouldn't it be chain 25, or start in the 4th chain or something?
Also no matter how I worked it, the first round makes ugly, protruding corners. It doesn't look that bad when the bag is filled, but is there no way to make the bottom more rounded, more neat?
The handles round also has me scratching my head: "pattern to end.. then sc... then ss to finish" off". Where is the end? Sc where? Slst to what?
Of course, one can fudge it, it's only a mesh bag, but even so, these construction and finishing touches are the most important parts of a pattern and not getting them right could make the finished object ugly and impractical.
