what are you making for the baby???

"What are you making for the baby???"

It would have to be one of the most frequently asked questions of me at the moment... it's right up there with "When are you due?" and "How far along are you?" and "Is it a boy or a girl?"

So to answer a few of those others... I am due June 19th... which happens to also be my 12th Wedding Anniversary (and three days before I turn 40)

Which makes me 26 weeks along at the moment, and those weeks really are starting to fly by.

No idea what the gender is. I like surprises, so I'll just be patient and wait until it POPS OUT and then find out! Not sure what it's like in your part of the world, but I almost feel like a bit of a freak here for not yet knowing the gender. So many expectant mothers do choose to know, and it feels quite odd to NOT know.

As for my own maternal instinct... who knows? Most days I'm certain that I'm carrying a girl... but then there's the odd day when I'm just as certain that it is a boy!!!

SO...

What am I making for the baby???

Well... remember all those mini skeins?

a table full of mini skeins

I started making them into small knitted squares...

P9100014

And then joined them together in a basketweave type layout...

Patchwork Baby Blanket 2011

But I didn't like how they sat so unevenly... it kind of gave a wavy appearance, rather than clean straight lines...

So I started over again, this time working in lengths like so...

Patchwork Baby Blanket 2011

And when I find the battery charger for my camera, I'll be able to take a progress photo to show you where I'm up to now!

I'm loving the way it looks, and I think you will too...

Now..

Does anyone know where my charger is???

I haven't used it since before I fell pregnant... and it isn't where I expected it to be!

Aaarghhhh!!!

Wow, what a Herculean task! :) I'm due July 15, and I am *extremely* ready to finish the blanket I've been working on for two months (which must be a lot less work than this one)...

It'll be fun to see all those mini skeins turned into a blanket. :o)

My sister is expecting (due in May) and she and her husband also decided to wait and be surprised. Around here (southern US), I think it's also fairly uncommon to not want to know the gender in advance.

Good luck finding that charger! We'll all be waiting as patiently as possible... ;o)

AHA! So the baby does have a due date! I recall all of you telling me that there was never a due date :)

We were given a baby afghan very similar to this and loved it. Let us know how you get along with the new approach!

oooh... that pile of mini-skeins got my heart racing, I've always preferred lots of different bits of yarn over large skeins, so many color mixing possibilities, hold any two together, make one thing out of many colors, stripe them in a hat, stripe them in gloves! ugh... (envy 1)

I discovered your blog while looking for the best way to make tassels to put on a baby blanket I just finished. Mine is a solid color, but I did a sort of basketweave pattern (alternating stockinette stitch squares--8 sitiches by 10 rows). At any rate, thought that your strips would be cute if you did something similar--alternating stockinette stitch blocks with each color change, and having the strip next door the opposite pattern. Just a thought. Will try to figure out how to send you a pic of mine (if I find my camera). The tassels added a nice element, though I don't know how practical they are on a baby blanket (she can always cut them off).
Love your stuff!

Hi Sharon! It's been ages since I popped into your blog. I didn't change over my feed when you changed your blog. Lovely to hear there is a bub on the way.
Cheers

My daughter is due with my first grand baby in September. She wants to know the sex as early as she can, which is helpful from a crocheters standpoint, I can have enough time to make more than generic green stuff. Personally I waited and was surprised at the time of birth. Congrats to you!

I'm making the cute pink and white baby blanket for my first grandchild. If you are up for a challenge, try this one. I only took it out 20+ times now it is going smoothly and wow, it has two patterns one on one side and different on back. I find it better to try working both colors so you can find errors quickly and not have to tear out so much. Makes a nice thick blanket. I bought the book and has some nice patterns to try, but one project at a time.

Wholly Mac,

The website ,http://www.interlockingcrochet.com/ has a free baby blanket pattern, they made it in blue, I guess I better make that one too!
I'm surprised that no body has looked in this blog. guess I will contact her with this site, it truly is a fun project to do, once I learned how that is. a real challenge at first.

Try it you like it!

Hi how many stitches do you cast on

laughing purple goldfish said...

Hello Candy... try casting on 15 stitches, and then work enough rows to make it square, befor changing colurs. Good luck!
