It's something from this Pattern Booklet - which is a lift-out from the Australian Women's Weekly, December 1, 1971...

This looks a lot to me like a slipper-- once you repeat the ribbing across the foot, and do decreases and a small strip, you fold it in half and sew and have a little mary-jane slipper. :)
I used to knit them all the time... I can't believe I can't remember the name of the pattern I used...
Is it the side of the stable or a bell? The colour is throwing me as it's not a christmas colour :).
