I have made some bags from plarn - and I find lining them with fabric, with a fabric band around the top - and then fabric handles works. I will try and put up a picture of one on my site later today. I don't think the plarn is strong enough to cope with the weight and pressure of the bag and handles oni ts own.
janet - would seriously love to see your photos... I've consider that exact method myself, but not actually tried it... so I would love to see the results
stramenda - it's not a stupid answer... you're thinking outside the square, and I love that! jute would be tough and non stretchy... which is exactly what I need... BUT it makes me sneeze too much, so it's not practical for an everyday bag for me!
Can you make a seperate loopy piece then attach it to the out side of the bag, sort of like a jeans waist band, but attach it over the top of the jeans it's self. The loopy look set that bag off.
cat - you're a clever little thinker! I could actually work it on the edge of the bag again, but on the wrong side, so that when it 'folds over' it is on the right side... and then attach the straps to the actual bag... hmmmm...
